Charlie Brown, Why the frown? Where have you gone That's got you so down? Charlie Brown, Don't play the fool. Don't let her take That football from you. Since you were a boy, you walked with your head hanging low, But now you're a grown man. And now you dream of the shore And a blanket on the sand, And on the blanket a girl, With a drink in her hand. And what she's wanting from you I know you'll understand, ‘Cause you're no longer a boy, you're a man. Charlie Brown, Why the frown? Even your dog says You drag him down. Hang up the phone, pack up the car. You'll never be happy If you stay where you are. Now drive to the sea, Let the wind blow wild through your hair. A winding road takes you there. And on the shore there's beach With a blanket in the sand, And on the blanket a girl, With a drink in her hand. And what she's wanting from you I know you'll understand, ‘Cause you're no longer a boy, you're a man. So go to her, Charlie, She's calling to you, She holds your future in her hands. You won't be sorry, I swear this is true, You'll find your happiness lying in the sands. And listen as she whispers sweetly to you, To be happy with who you are! So Charlie Brown, Hang up that frown. Charlie Brown, No more little girls Named after candy Or with natural curls. The doctor you saw is no longer in. It’s time to be happy in your own skin. They all let you down, but you know it’s their loss in the end. Even your thumb-sucking friend. And on the beach at the shore there’s a blanket in the sand, And on that blanket a girl, with a drink in her hand. And what she’s wanting from you, I know you’ll understand, ‘cause you’re no longer a boy, you’re a man! So go to her, Charlie, She's calling to m you, She holds your future in her hands. You won't be sorry, I swear this is true, You'll find your happiness lying in the sands. And listen as she whispers sweetly to you, To be happy with who you are! So Charlie Brown, Hang up that frown.

All I Know 06:19
Verse I Now this might not sound like a sad song (piano) But if that’s what you think, then you haven’t been listening long. (piano) ‘Cause it wasn’t so long ago That every morning started out so cold and damp and dark and gray Nowhere important to go Happiness said to me, “Better luck another day.” Verse II Couldn’t get myself out of bed I had the curtains drawn and the covers pulled over my head. Didn’t want to face a new day, With no one to talk to and nothing to say anyway. Walked around like I was lost Bought a couple of tacos with my last bit of loose change. Should have used it doing the wash, But a guy gets hungry when his life is getting rearranged. Mini break And it got me to thinking of you Wondering where you’ve gone since the day you left me Telling me we’re finally through, And leaving me alone to wonder why I still feel that … Chorus All I Know is When I’m In Love With You Everything seems so new Like I’m born again In your arms. And All I Know is when we’re together it’s true The sky never seems so blue So fly home to me And we’ll never be apart again (and you’ll never have to leave again) (and you’ll never want to leave again) Verse III Walking down the same cold street When suddenly I felt a new sensation deep inside of me, I was tired of looking down at my feet I lifted my eyes and saw the beauty tat surrounded me! So I thought I’d put the world to a test Picked out a perfect stranger and gave the girl a silly little grin After she got over the shock Well I’ll be darned if she didn’t smile right back at me. Mini Break And it got me to thinking of you, If it worked on a stranger can it happen to the one I love? After all that I put you through, Can I end all this pain and make your happy with me again? Chorus All I Know is When I’m In Love With You Everything seems so new Like I’m born again In your arms. And All I Know is when we’re together it’s true The sky never seems so blue So fly home to me And we’ll never be apart again (SOLOS) Verse IV Now here’s where you come in, Though others might believe your cause of all my grief and pain. I never did give in, To blame someone else for the problems I’ve caused myself. So come and see the things I have done, To turn things around And put my sorry life on solid ground. I finally tackled Job Number One, And I hope you can see what I’ve found … Chorus All I Know is when I’m In Love With You Everything seems so new Like I’m born again In your arms And All I Know is when we’re together it’s true The sky never seems so blue So fly home to me And we’ll never be apart again

Verse I My life was going to be this crazy dream, Of cities and planes, hotel and buses and trains, And stages and theaters and chanting crowds, And strangers who love me ‘till the curtain goes down. Verse I, Part 2 I always saw you in the second row, The prettiest girl with the darkest long hair, The places I’d take you, London, Paris or Rome. And back here in Chesterfield, our very own home. But reality wasn’t so kind, To my body my soul or my mind. I spent it chasing the corporate dime, And wasting away from the grind. There’s always a cost for the grind. Chorus I’ve got Unfinished Business that I left behind, When I was much younger and I thought I had time, But I wasted it all, thinking I’d be just fine, I didn’t see the clock ticking away, I never counted the fast flying days! Verse II A few notes of piano, a soft voice in my ear, Take me back through each and every one of those years. I’m still the kids who thinks the world’s so alive, And you ares still my princess with the fairy tale eyes. 1st Bridge: Ready to start again, To open my heart again. It’s never too late to try, Don’t give in and say goodbye. When there’s time! When there’s time! Just time! Give me Time! Verse III The only thing left from those old fantasies, The only thing that keeps me hanging onto those dreams. Is how you keep me going through the thick and the thin, I can’t let you down, so I am trying again. I’ve got a new way of seeing my time, That gives my life its reason and rhyme, By living all of my daydreams, sublime, And thanking the Lord for the Time, Dear God, thank you for the time. Last Bridge I want to relight the fires That give me the burning desire. The moment has finally arrived, To keep my dreams alive. I’ve got time! Time! Give me Time! Just time! Last Chorus I’ve got Unfinished Business that I left behind, When I was much younger and I thought I had time, But I wasted it all, thinking I’d be just fine, I didn’t see the clock ticking away, I never counted the fast flying days! UNUSED: BRIDGE Ideas It’s all flooding back to me, The way it used to be. Old things are new again, New things are true again. Hanging onto the dream this time, Every sight and sound in real time. Or: Ready to start again To open my heart again. Loving you all night long. As long as the music is on I Have Time … I have time … Time … Just time … ! Last Verse I no longer waste my time asking why, I’m busy readying for another try. And as long as you are by my side, We should be ready for a real wild ride.

On a summer day, I lie, with my face turned skyward, And my back against solid ground. Feeling every ray of sunlight caress the fields, Draws from my mind, Daydreams sublime, Endless as all time. Lying in the tallest, softest, grassy fields, Under skies made free of the clouds, Squinting into crystal blue and endless sunlight, And my thoughts are borne on breezes, Wafting through the Summerfields And Daydreams, Floating in my mind. Reaching out my hand, I yearn to express such beauty, Beauty I know I find in you. Your hand touches mine and I feel the warmth, like sunlight, Reaching for earth, Bathing every field, Touching every stream. And even like a summer storm, so dark with thunder, You refresh my soul with delight. Gently you descend to blanket me with love, Like the melancholy rain, That lights upon the ground to give The fields of summer their glow.

about

Over the years, it's been a privilege and a thrill to write all kinds of music for all kinds of groups, from jazz combos and salsa bands to projects for film and theatre.

"Composer" is an album of a little bit of everything. It starts with three tunes written recently for my alt rock/fusion jazz combo, The Eddie Carr Five, followed by two originals for big band jazz ensemble. In fact, I just heard that the second one, "If You Can't Hurt The One You Love ..." is being played in concert this month (12/2013) by the Radford University jazz ensemble.

Following that, there are four jazz selections from the score to the short film "Backstage." Combining jazz with film was a natural for me, and basing a lot of the cues on Duke's immortal "Sophisticated Lady" in differing iterations made it even more fun.

I had the pleasure of playing trumpet for almost ten years with a 12-piece salsa orchestra called "La Solución Latina." We released one CD, and two tunes I wrote for the group made the album. One of them, "Yo Sueño Contigo" (I Dream About You), was a finalist in a GRAMMYs regional songwriting competition in 2003.

"Slamming Doors On The Past" was a real departure, in that much of my writing to that point was for actual groups with acoustic instruments. I'd done very little for purely synthesized instruments. Slamming Doors was written in the electronica style for a modern dance ensemble.

"To Fly In Angels' Skies" is part of two scores written to be played during the live air show performances of the former U.S. and World Champion acrobatic pilot Leo Loudenslager and his Bud Light Air Force. The music was used throughout their world tours.

Still one of my favorite projects was the film "Sunrise At Soward's Butte," by director Marc Marriott. Shot on location in the rugged and beautiful landscape of southern Utah, it told the story of a photographer hoping to rediscover his artistic inspiration with the help of a painter who had transformed into a surly cowboy. The huge landscapes, contrasted with the quiet moments of introspection of the two artists, made for some nice moments to write music for, simple, melodic things for cello, violin, flute, piano, and cowboy guitar.

And finally, the album concludes with "Summerfields and Daydreams," a piece in three movements for jazz band and orchestral strings. The performance was recorded live, at my college senior recital!

Enjoy!
