Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

about

A personal, sentimental note about this recording. The flugelhorn that I use here once belonged to my great uncle Leland Cardwell, a fine trumpeter and guitarist. Leland passed away when I was a teen. What instruments he played and what happened to them became something of a family legend, and many years passed before I was to hear anything more about them. Just a few years ago, his son and my grandmother’s nephew, Al, responded to a note I had shared about looking for a used flugelhorn. A few days later, I received a UPS box containing the flugelhorn in its case.

I did a little research and discovered that Leland’s horn was made in Paris, France by the Antoine Courtois company, which traces its origins to 1789. This model was sold in the U.S. under the Leblanc label, and Leland bought it from the Forrest Band Instrument Shop on Shattuck Ave. in Berkeley, CA, probably sometime in the 1950s or 60s.

I’m very grateful to Al Cardwell for entrusting this special instrument to my hands, and I hope Leland would be happy to know that it still plays as smooth and sweet as ever.
